Discipline


Howard Gardner reminds us in Changing Minds that when you are trying to persuade your child to change his or her mind or take a different action, you won't get anywhere by repeating your argument over and over.


Instead, Gardner advises you to "redescribe" your points to be influential. Translated into a discipline situation, this means you must think of several different ways to say the same thing to your child. The next time you're trying to convince him or her, try both redescribing and repetition to get the behavior you want. It works.
